The nghê is a mythological creature unique to Vietnam. As a means of warding off evil spirits, a pair of Nghê is typically displayed outside temples. Nghê might look like a Chinese guardian lion at first glance, but it is actually modeled after a dog. While Chinese lions are often depicted as fierce and intimidating creatures, Nghê are depicted as having gentler appearances, with canine-like postures, lean bodies, small heads, curved-up tails (or tailless), and ears like dogs.
