Nghê is a sacred beast unique to Vietnamese culture. At first glance, it might be mistaken for a Chinese guardian lion but it is actually a dog. While the Chinese lions are depicted as having intimidating expressions and muscular bodies; the Nghê take on a gentler appearance with dog-like expressions, stances, ears, either with fluffy tails or tailless, and small lean bodies. Nghê statues can be found guarding sacred temples and shrines throughout Vietnam.
