This design is based on the "tiger face" stone carvings (traditionally known as Hổ Phù) found in a shrine built during the Lê Dynasty. However, the term "Hổ Phù" is a misnomer because originally it is associated with a type of Chinese tiger amulet and lion face iconography, although the creature in Vietnamese art is influenced by the demon Rahu from Hinduism.
